"Ode to an Asshole"
I know this is not the norm for us at 1d4Rounds. We make goofy jokes. Sometimes it's making fun of blind superheroes. Sometimes we goof on card games, or Dungeons and Dragons. And from time to time, we joke about social topics.
But not today. Today, we make light of something a bit more serious.
I understand a lot of people out there are cheering the death of this man, Fred Phelps. (Of the Westboro Baptist Church.) We are not those people. This man, and his ilk, are responsible for so much negativity, malice, and hate, that I can understand the compulsion to do so... But If his message is something you truly disapproved of, then you do them a much greater disservice, turning the other cheek so to speak, and not responding in kind.
I can't in all good conscience, be pleased at the passing of this man. Perhaps this is in conflict with my baser nature. Perhaps a part of me understands that him not being around, will benefit all of the world in a profound way... But the truth is, I know I would be a better man, to make mention of it. Then put it aside.
So, even though I am religious in much the same way, if a dog is born in a tree, it's a bird... (Which is to say, not at all.) I believe in a level headed human decency. One that perhaps, some people, like the man above, may never have practiced or advocated. And more than happiness at his passing, I feel a terrible sadness, that he could not have found it in his mind, or his heart, to have changed his ways before leaving our world.
That being said... He was an asshole in life. A terrible, monstrosity of a man. Only content whilst propagating an agenda of hate and disapproval. From his disgusting rallies against civil rights, to his demonstrably sickening protests at the funerals of our fallen soldiers... He was wretched.
But, to his family and friends and followers... I am terribly sorry for your loss.
While I in no way condone his beliefs or practices...
I am saddened that anyone must feel the pain of losing a father, husband, or leader.
Our sympathies,
- Deece and Zach (1d4Rounds)
