A few thoughts on AdSense from Google... I run a webcomic, that draws a decent amount of views weekly. Mostly on Friday and Saturday as that is when I release new content, and when my viewers are most likely to be free to check it out. AdSense was working out great. The rates were good, the ads targeted my audience well. (Since the comic is based on nerd culture and tabletop fantasy gaming, we had a lot of MMORPG ads, and card game ads, as well as Paizo/WhiteWolf/etc...)
But, A few weeks back... I had a comic go mini-viral. There were a ton of impressions and clicks, and my google analytics software went bonkers. We're talking really above average numerics. I was afraid that maybe they would suspect that I had done something sketchy. (A little comic artist humor... sketchy... get it?) And that was the result. Luckily, they never said a word, sent an email, or bothered to call. I was pretty relieved about that, and went on about my week, pleased that I was finally getting the recognition from new viewers, that a purveyor of such amazing art, like myself deserved. (Joking... joking...)
But, just a few days ago. Much to my chagrin, I received an ominous email from the big boys at Casa De La Google. They told me my AdSense account was disabled due to some phantom issue they would not divulge. I was horrified. I am finally getting that boost in viewership, only to have the one real form of financial gain, get blasted.
They informed me that I could appeal the issue. Ya know... the one they said existed but never bothered to explain. I was unsure of exactly how to reply. I wasn't aware there was an issue. And now that I was. I was unsure of what it was exactly. Yet I pressed on, making an appeal. Trying to explain that I could not explain, that which I was unaware of. They responded quickly. (within the hour)... With a ruling of, "Your account with google adsense has been banned."
What?! What does that mean? I, still unaware of the issue, am now guilty of it?
Still, I have no clue what the issue was about. I have no idea if it is still occurring. I don't know how to stop it if it is. I now wander the wastescape of adsense banned content providers. Never knowing true rest... and yearning for the days of google's warm embrace. But on a more important note. They took all of the money I had made, and I was out twisting in the proverbial wind. (What a sucker punch.)
From this... I want to tell you. If you do decide to use adsense. And I believe everyone should. As it is a great method. Make sure, you don't put all of your eggs in google's awkwardly shaped, merciless basket. Make sure to diversify your advertising. So that if you do "too well" one week... You don't lose everything.
